Band Camp 2018

WELCOME TO THE 2018 EDITION OF THE MARCHING VIRGINIANS!

It’s hard to believe that summer is halfway over and we’re preparing for the coming season of Hokie football. We hope you’ve had a relaxing and enjoyable summer and are ready to come join the Marching Virginians in Blacksburg! The contents of this website contain detailed information about the coming season and your participation in the 2018 Edition of The Marching Virginians.

This is a unique time for the MVs. It is the first time in 32 years that the band won’t be under the direction of Mr. Dave McKee. Dave retired last year and left behind a fantastic legacy. I am honored to be the next Director of The Marching Virginians. I served as the Assistant Director of this band for five years and couldn’t be more thrilled about coming back to join assistant director Chad Reep for a fantastic season!

Now…are you ready for some Hokie football and a great season with The Marching Virginians? We have some huge games this season, including our home football game against Notre Dame on October 6, and Band Parent’s Day on the Thursday night contest versus Georgia Tech on October 25. Those games PLUS Homecoming, Hokies for the Hungry, our 13th annual Band-A-Rama, and an away game to UNC. Get set for an incredible experience performing for a season of over half a million football fans!

Executive Officer Mackenzie Knox and her officers have been working hard throughout the summer to prepare for your arrival and the rest of the season! They have done a GREAT job of keeping me on track and making sure everything gets done!

If you’re wondering what you can do to prepare for your audition to get into the band, my advice is to PRACTICE. The more in shape your chops are, the better you will do throughout the audition process. The audition takes place over multiple days and includes music and marching components, so you’ll want to make sure that you are in shape and (reasonably) ready to play for hours every day!

Your date of arrival is clearly indicated in the information on this website, and your registration is due by WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1. If you are living on campus, please send your accurate DATE OF ARRIVAL and carefully read the enclosed materials. Please note that the schedule is very tight on check-in day, so plan your arrival in Blacksburg accordingly. If you need to arrive early, let us know!

Whether it’s your first or fifth year with the MVs, please print/review all the pertinent information on this site and respond accordingly. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we’ll see you next month with The Spirit of Tech, THE MARCHING VIRGINIANS.

Sincerely,

Dr. Polly Middleton
Director, The Marching Virginians

MV Band Camp FAQ

New to the MVs? Make sure to also check out our New MV FAQ. If you have any additional questions, please contact us.

What does my audition include?

There are three simple components to the audition—Music, Marching, and Attitude. What does that mean? We expect you to do the work as best you can (play well, drum well, spin well), march well (left foot, right foot, posture, carriage, etc.), and be a happy, positive person! You will absolutely make mistakes throughout the audition process. Think about how you deal with those mistakes. We always strive to do better and be better. Dust yourself off and move on!

Make sure to download your audition music and get more information from your leadership about their expectations as well.

How many people make the band?

In order to present a well-balanced musical and visual presentation, we have a set instrumentation. Our goal is: 36 piccolos, 36 clarinets, 36 saxes, 63 trumpets, 27 horns, 36 trombones, 14 baritones, 22-24 tubas, 35 percussion, 36 flags, 1-3 feature twirlers, and 8-14 managers.

Who determines who makes the band?

Student leaders, with the guidance and oversight of the directors, applied music faculty, and staff make the decisions based (primarily) on music, marching, and attitude.

What if I don't make it?

  • Talk to Polly about being a manager AFTER the auditions are completed
  • Come play in Symphony Band, Campus Band, or Pep Band
  • Register to re-audition next year. Many members audition multiple times before becoming a member!

Is there a band dorm?

If you're an incoming freshman who is NOT living in themed housing, we do have a space in Pritchard that is reserved for MVs. Although it is not a band dorm, or an official living and learning community, Pritchard houses a fairly large number of band members together, so you’re more inclined to see a friendly face in the hallway by doing this! You can also request to have a band members as a roommate. This is a great way to meet someone who has similar interests and a similar schedule (especially on game day!). If you’re interested in this option, you can fill out a form you get from Polly or Chad when you are on campus for orientation.

If you have questions or concerns, please let Polly know BEFORE July 25!

When (and what) is Band Parents Day?

BAND PARENTS DAY (BPD) is actually Band Parents Weekend! The Georgia Tech game on Thursday, October 25, is designated as BPD this year. We'll have a block of tickets available for that game. They are NOT on the 50-yard line, but they are together, and your family members will enjoy a great day of the MVs and Hokie football. Please remind your parents NOT to buy tickets to that game from others—we need to sell every ticket in our block. There's also a pregame tailgate for which you can purchase tickets!

BUT, there's more! Tell your parents to stick around through Friday, October 26th, to enjoy the 13th annual Band-A-Rama Spectacular—an indoor concert in Burruss Auditorium featuring the Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Marching Virginians. It is a GREAT weekend!

Tickets for all of these events can be pre-ordered. We'll send information to all MVs about Band Parents Weekend during the first week or two of the school year!
