Homecoming: VT vs. Pitt

Some may say that the odds were set against us from the beginning, but that didn’t stop the Hokie football team from bringing their all to the field tonight. In spite of a crushing defeat, the team (and the MVs) kept their heads and spirits up for an enjoyable homecoming game!

The first quarter started slow, the score settling at 7-0, Pitt, halfway with 6 minutes left. This didn’t stop our amazing band from bringing the hype to the stands! We kept our confidence up and worked to blow the fans away.

At the beginning of the second quarter, the VTubas had the pleasure of sharing Worsham with the tubas from Pitt’s pep band! The visitors tried their best to follow along with the elaborate Hokie Pokie dance, and we applauded their efforts. The Panthers’ piccs also paid the VT Student Section a visit to meet our own MV Pix! We had the pleasure of getting a group picture with these visitors and loved the receptive brotherly love between bands.

The half ended with a score of 21-0, Pitt having scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter. The MVs migrated down from the stands to take the field for an encore performance of VT Power Closer and to accompany the homecoming proceedings with VPI & Moonlight and the Alma Mater.

Although our football team may not have won, three deserving VT Greeks claimed victories on Worsham today. These individuals are Claire Cunningham of Gamma Phi Beta, John Moss of Alpha Tau Omega, and Kat Herrick of Chi Delta Alpha. Claire’s platform is Making Strides 4 Haitian Midwives (supporting rural healthcare in Haiti), John’s platform is Speak Up & Speak Out With Moss (supporting awareness of domestic violence of on college campuses), and Kat’s platform is Your Story’s Not Over With Kat (raising awareness of suicide prevention).

Back in the stands, the third quarter took on a new air of excitement! Instead of being tired out from an awesome performance, the MVs were more energized than ever! The Hokies scored their first touchdown with 6:30 left on the clock, just a few minutes after Pitt scored their fourth touchdown of the game.

After the third quarter, the stands began to empty and the game slowed, but our MVs stood their ground- that is, their bleachers.

With the fourth quarter being 0-0, the game ended 28-7, with the Panthers taking a win. Don’t worry, though! We’ll be back next week to play Syracuse on Band Parents Day, and are looking forward to seeing you there for kickoff at 12:30. Happy homecoming, happy sesquicentennial, and as always, go Hokies!
