Frequently Asked Questions
How many people are in The Marching Virginians?
Though you often hear the line "330 Strong!", the MVs actually have around 340-360 members depending on the season.
Are the Marching Virginians a scholarship band?
No. With the exception of one current scholarship opportunity for an outstanding engineer in the MVs, all members are enrolled in MUS 3314 – Instrumental Music Ensemble, and receive one credit for their participation in MVs each fall semester. We are proud of our volunteer student-musicians!
Where do the MVs rehearse?
The MVs rehearse Monday-Friday from 5:30-7:00 pm during the fall semester at the Sochinski-McKee Marching Virginians Center (MVC) located at the top of the Chicken Hill parking lot. Go through the stoplight on Southgate Drive at the intersection with Beamer Way and Corporate Research Center Drive. Turn right into the large parking lot and head up the hill. Look for our tower - you can’t miss us!
What is the Band-A-Rama Benefit Spectacular?
Each year, The Marching Virginians join forces with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble to present a celebration of the Virginia Tech bands. Narrated by The Voice of The Marching Virginians, Mike Sparrer, the concert provides something for everyone’s musical taste. The performance concludes with the MVs ONLY indoor concert of the year – fun for the entire family! Proceeds from this concert are used to fund student music activities.
How can I see the MVs if I don’t go to VT Football Games?
Come by a rehearsal during the fall or check out our YouTube channel. If you’re interested in joining, you can also contact our director to schedule a meet and greet during your visit to campus!
Do The Marching Virginians ever do exhibition performances?
Yes we do! When the football schedule gives us an opportunity, we hit the road to perform at high school marching festivals and contests. You can check for these events on our Performance Schedule.
How can I support The Marching Virginians?
The Marching Virginians are fortunate to have dedicated alumni, students, and fans who generously support the band. With their efforts, the MVs have been able to set up The Marching Virginians Endowment and build the Sochinski-McKee Marching Virginians Center, a rehearsal and storage facility opened in 2015.
