  • There are actually over 350 student-musicians in The Marching Virginians.
  • In any given year, members represent at least seven different colleges within the University.
  • The Marching Virginians represent 18 states. Over 80% of MVs are from Virginia.
  • The band rehearses 90 minutes daily in order to prepare a different show for each home performance.
  • Each show requires over 5,000 man-hours, resulting in a total of 35,000 hours (four years) on the marching field.
  • The Marching Virginians will march over 65,000 miles, or three times around the world, in any season.
  • On the field for a halftime show, there are an average of 330 people, $500,000 worth of school instruments, 3,200 separate uniform parts, and about 16,000 combined years of musical experience.
  • The Marching Virginians march 14 different instruments: piccolos, clarinets, alto and tenor saxes, trumpets, mellophones, trombones, baritones, sousaphones, and 5 types of percussion instruments. We also feature a flag corps, twirlers, and 2 drum majors.
  • Daily operations are managed by a student staff selected by the band leadership.
  • The library staff will copy and distribute over 14,000 pieces of music during the season.
  • Service to the band is provided by Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Band Fraternity and Sorority.
  • The 4th Director of The Marching Virginians, David McKee, has been immortalized with his very own "bobble head" character - TWICE!
