Every MV and countless Hokies know this phrase. Managing such a large group is admittedly difficult, and our officers do a fantastic job. But at large events, there is a lot of work to be done. Often, Dr. Polly Middleton, Director of the Marching Virginians, turns to Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi, the band’s service sorority and fraternity, for help. Both organizations serve the band and give back to the organization that does so much for every one of its members. In this post, three membership candidates of Tau Beta Sigma, Meredith Smith, Sean Peters, and Jessica Stewart, share how rushing Tau Beta Sigma has shaped their MV Experience.

“I wanted to be a part of an organization that serves the community is some way, and TBS was the perfect way to do that.”
-Meredith Smith, Membership Candidate, Feature Twirler

As an MV, there are many experiences you don’t want to miss out on, and a community such as TBS or KKPsi is an excellent way to get more involved with the bands at Virginia Tech. As Sean Peters, trumpet and membership candidate, puts it,

“TBS offers a community of fun people that are some of the most enthusiastic and caring in the band.” Rushing Tau Beta Sigma is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Without a doubt, the MVs are a family. TBS is a different community–it’s a way to connect with others, especially focused on sisterhood and service. “I felt like there was something missing from my MV experience, and TBS was the perfect way to fill the gap,” said Sean. “It’s a place where I can make friends who all love band, and who are all so dedicated to bettering the band for future Hokies,” added Jessica Stewart, membership candidate and trombone.

With a little bit less than a month left before the membership process is over, what would these three candidates say to future hokies considering TBS?

“Enjoy your rush process! It only happens once, but it’s a fun experience to get to know everyone in your rush class and learn a lot about Tau Beta Sigma.”

-Jessica Stewart

“I know commitment is hard, especially when it seems as big of a commitment as TBS, but it has been 100% worth it.”

-Meredith Smith

“If you are considering it, you won't regret doing it. For me, it seemed like one of those things I would regret not doing if I didn't rush.”
 -Sean Peters
