Every year, the Marching Virginians partner with the Red Cross in order to help connect willing blood donors with patients in need of blood.

The annual Marching Virginians Blood Drive is coming up on Tuesday, March 16th and Wednesday, March 17th! The blood drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 16th and 17th in the Graduate Life Center’s Multipurpose Room.

We ask that you consider joining us during the donation dates to serve an important cause!

Volunteering

In addition to donating, MVs can sign-up to volunteer at the event to help it run smoothly! Volunteer duties include keeping track of appointment attendance and noting any walk-ins. Volunteers may also be asked to help with additional tasks like handing out snacks to blood donors.

Donating

Interested in donating? Here are a few things you should know.

You can donate more than just blood. While making a “Whole Blood Donation” is certainly beneficial, everyone should be aware of the other ways to donate. The four ways to donate are outlined below.

  • Whole Blood: Whole blood is simply the blood that flows through your veins. It contains red cells, white cells, and platelets, suspended in plasma. You can donate whole blood every 56 days.

  • Power Red: Power Red is similar to whole blood, except a special machine is used to allow you to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one donation while returning your plasma and platelets to you. Red blood cells are in highest demand by patients and this maximizes your impact. You can donate Power Red every 112 days, but you must have type O, A- or B- blood to donate.

  • Platelet Donation: While this type of donation will NOT be available at the MV Blood Drive, platelets are also in high demand by patients fighting cancer, chronic diseases, and traumatic injuries. You can donate platelets every seven days!

  • AB Elite Plasma Donation: This type of donation will not be available at the
MV Blood Drive. In order to complete this kind of donation, you must have type AB blood.

For starters, one donation of blood can save up to three lives. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a critical need for blood right now. By giving just an hour of your time, you can help meet this need! In addition to feeling great about helping others, you will receive a mini-physical to check your pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and body temperature. All donated blood is tested for COVID-19 antibodies, so you can find out both your blood type and if you have COVID-19 antibodies! If all of that still isn’t enough to convince you, there are some material benefits involved too. While and after donating, you get free cookies and juice, an “I gave blood” sticker, and a free t-shirt! There’s something for everyone at the 2021 MV Blood Drive! In a time that’s been difficult for many people, there has never been an easier way to make a difference and maybe even save a life.
